Hairdressing Apprenticeship

IFL offers a unique combination of open learning or classroom-based routes into a worthwhile career path. You will have an introduction to the world of hairdressing, whilst working alongside professionals to inspire you in a real salon working environment, where you will experience a well-rounded commercially viable apprenticeship experience.
Apprentices develop the key techniques, knowledge and the skills needed in the industry through practical training and backed up by theoretical knowledge. Further progression to salon trainer/assessor or career progression to television/theatre or cruise ships.

Hair Professional level 2

The new standard Hair Professional qualification has been designed and trialled by employers to ensure shop-floor ready qualified staff at a level 2 standard. There is a new holistic approach and trend to the qualification, where full services will have a mandatory End-Point Assessment (EPA).  Theory training with City & Guilds external evolve on-line exams in each unit will be delivered by IFL training consultants, practical will be taught by the employer and assessed by a qualified assessor in line with the qualification requirements. City & Guilds EPA will certificate learners once they have passed the gateway and passed the final End-Point Assessment.   By the end of approximately 18-24 months level 2 apprentices will be able to offer full services in a commercial salon.

During the apprenticeship you will cover mandatory units

  • Consultation skills
  • Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
  • Cut hair using a range of techniques to create a variety of looks
  • Style and finish hair using a range of techniques to create a variety of looks
  • Colour and lighten hair using a variety of techniques

Optional units

  • Perming hair
  • Hair relaxing treatments and techniques
  • Hair extension services

Advanced and Creative Hair Professional L3 (Entry requirements – hair professional L2 or equivalent)

An advanced and creative hair professional apprentice will be a passionate, creative, and driven person working in the hair industry. They will take ownership and responsibility of their own work, be proactive, flexible and adaptable, plan their work and time, they aim for excellence by taking exceptional pride in their work and industry.

An advanced hair professional will:

  • Demonstrate professionalism, confidentiality, and discretion
  • Research fashion trends to plan, create and promote a collection of hair styles and looks
  • Analyse the factors that influence design and creation a collection of styles
  • Design a range of looks
  • Maintain safe working methods
  • Use and design a range of sectioning and cutting guidelines including precision cuts
  • Carry out precision and personalized cutting
  • Present a showcase to promote their skills, via a variety of media platforms
  • Provide smoothing and strengthening services
  • Carry out in-depth consultation
  • Use and apply products in accordance with legal requirements
  • Provide advice on future services
  • Evaluate results of services to improve practice

Finally present a showcase to an IEPA showing competence in practical skills followed by a professional discussion.
